What Are Dental Implants

What are dental implants and how do they work?

Dental implants are tiny, strong titanium posts that act as tooth roots that we gently place right into your jawbone. The post then gradually fuses with your natural bone in a process called osseointegration, creating an incredibly secure and stable foundation. Once that bond is solid, we can attach a beautiful, custom-made crown that looks, feels, and functions just like your natural tooth. It’s truly a revolutionary way to bring back your smile, allowing you to eat, speak, and laugh with complete confidence, without any of the worries associated with missing teeth or traditional dentures.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Overall, dental implants provide a durable, aesthetically pleasing, and functional solution for replacing missing teeth, significantly improving your quality of life, including:

Improved appearance: This is a major benefit as dental implants look and feel like your natural teeth. Because they are fused to your bone, they become permanent, and restore your smile, and reduce any facial sagging caused by missing teeth.

Enhanced speech: Missing teeth can affect your ability to speak clearly. Dentures, if they are poorly fitting, can also slip and affect speech. Dental implants provide a way for you to speak without worry.

Easier eating: Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favourite foods with confidence and without pain.

Improved oral health: Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth. More of your own teeth are left intact, improving long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving your chances of good flossing techniques and brushing.

Increased comfort: Dental implants become a part of your body, so you won’t even notice any difference to your natural teeth once they are healed.

Preservation of jawbone: Implants stimulate bone growth, preventing bone loss and maintaining facial structure.

Durability and longevity: With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime. They are a long-term solution to replace teeth.

High success rate: Dental implant treatment has a high success rate. You are in safe hands with our experienced dental implant surgeon.

What is the treatment process for dental implants?

Step 1 Consultation:
We start with an initial consultation where we discuss in detail your treatment plan and how long we envisage the treatment will take. We will assess your oral health and discuss your treatment options.

Step 2 Assessment:
In your assessment, we take detailed X-rays and scans of your mouth. Think of it like mapping out the perfect spot for your new tooth.

These images are incredibly important because they allow us to see the bone density in your jaw. For an implant to be strong and stable, it needs enough healthy bone to support it, just like a natural tooth root. Our scans help us pinpoint the ideal location, ensuring your implant has the best possible foundation.

Step 3 Implant placement:
Placing an implant is often easier than taking a tooth out and is usually done using a simple local anaesthetic. You will not feel any pain at the time but, just like after an extraction, you may feel some discomfort during the week after the surgery.

If you are very nervous or if the case is a complicated one, we can give you dental sedation. A general anaesthetic is rarely used for implants and is generally only used for very complicated cases.

After your implants have been placed, the bone in your jaw needs to grow onto them and fuse to them. This usually takes a few months. Sometimes the implants may be stable enough when they are placed for the false teeth to be fitted sooner than this.

Step 4 Temporary teeth:
If you are having one, two, or three teeth replaced, you may have a temporary denture in the meantime. If you already have full dentures, you can keep wearing these while your implants are healing. Your dentures will need altering, to fit properly after the surgery, and a ‘healing cap’ will usually be placed onto the implant site to protect it.

Step 5 Healing period:
Your jawbone will fuse with the implants during the healing period, a process known as osseointegration.

Step 6 Permanent teeth:
Once the implants have fully integrated, a permanent denture, crown or bridge will be attached to the implants. The fitting makes the treatment worth the wait when you can see yourself with a full smile again. We test the crowns or bridge before fitting them in place to check the fit and make sure that you are happy with the result. We then fix them in place to the implant abutment using a special dental adhesive.

Aftercare

Aftercare is important if you are going to have a long-lasting, successful implant. We will give you detailed advice on how to look after your implants. Cleaning around the teeth attached to the implants is no more difficult than cleaning natural teeth. However, there may be areas that are difficult to reach, and you’ll be shown how to clean them. You may need to visit our hygienist more often, but we can talk to you about this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely! We're delighted to confirm that we do indeed offer comprehensive dental implant treatments right here in Berkshire and Thatcham. We understand how important it is to have a local, trusted team for such a life-changing procedure, and we're committed to providing exceptional care and beautiful, lasting results for patients seeking to restore their smiles in these areas.

When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dental implants offer a superior solution compared to traditional dentures, primarily because they replicate the entire tooth structure, including the root. Unlike dentures, which simply rest on your gums and can slip, click, or cause discomfort, implants are securely anchored into your jawbone, behaving just like natural teeth. This means you can enjoy all your favourite foods without worry, speak with complete confidence, and maintain the natural shape of your face by preventing the jawbone deterioration that often occurs with tooth loss. While dentures may have a lower initial cost, their ongoing maintenance, the potential for replacements, and limitations on diet often make implants a more comfortable, stable, and long-term cost-effective choice for a truly natural and confident smile.

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last for many years, often a lifetime. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene practices are essential to ensure their longevity. Implants are a safe, well-established treatment. It’s probably true to say that implants, much like natural teeth, will last for as long as you care for them.

If you don’t look after your implants, they can develop a coating similar to what you get on neglected natural teeth. Left untreated, this can lead to gum infection, bleeding, soreness, and general discomfort.

If your implants are well looked after, and if the bone they are fitted to is strong and healthy, you can expect them to last for many years. However, just as with other surgical implants (such as a hip replacement) there is no lifetime guarantee.

The best way to determine if you're a suitable candidate for dental implants is to schedule a free comprehensive consultation with us. While many people who are missing teeth are indeed good candidates, there are several key factors we'll need to assess. We'll look at your overall oral health, paying close attention to the health of your gums and the density of your jawbone, as these are crucial for supporting the implant. We'll also discuss your general health and medical history, as certain conditions or medications can influence the healing process. We'll also consider your lifestyle, such as smoking habits, and your commitment to maintaining excellent oral hygiene. Rest assured, our team will conduct a thorough examination, including advanced scans, to create a personalised treatment plan and discuss all your options, ensuring you have all the information you need to make the best decision for your smile.

Yes, if you don’t care for them well enough. If you keep them clean and have them regularly checked by your dental team you should not have any problems. Smoking also affects the health of implants. So, if you smoke, you may need to look after your implants more carefully. Some dentists will not place dental implants in people who are smokers.

Implants are not normally available on the NHS. Implants are available privately. However, in many situations, the cost of the treatment is only a little more than the cost of more conventional private dental treatment with crowns and bridges. Over the longer term, implants are usually a more cost-effective and satisfactory option.

Yes. You can have any number of teeth replaced with implants – from one single tooth to a complete set.

Good oral hygiene practices, including brushing and flossing, are essential to maintain the health of your All-on-4 implants.
